IN PICTURES: The 53rd Kamahardikaan sin Tawi-Tawi Lepa Festival

The Lepa Festival Night was held on September 24, 2026, at the Chinese Pier in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, as part of the 53rd Kamahardikaan sin Tawi-Tawi celebration. The event honored the rich maritime culture and traditional way of life of the Sama Dilaut, also known as Badjao, communities of Tawi-Tawi.

A highlight of the celebration was the fluvial parade featuring 42 participating lepa boats, with 39 qualifying for the competition. The event also featured colorful boat displays, traditional music and dance performances, and other cultural activities showcasing the community’s ancestral traditions and enduring connection to the sea.

The Lepa Festival celebrates the traditional houseboats known as lepa, which reflect the Sama Dilaut’s maritime heritage and identity. Through this annual celebration, residents and visitors are given an opportunity to appreciate the province’s vibrant culture and traditions.

The decorated lepa boats were displayed at the Chinese Pier along Ridjiki Boulevard, adding color and excitement to the festivities.
